SMART Proposes Bus Fare Changes; Input Requested

SMART Bus may be changing their fare structure!

This new fare structure is the result of a partnership between DDOT & SMART that was announced last August [Detroit News] to make riding the bus easier. TRU is very excited for these changes as this represents a big step towards continued regional cooperation between SMART & DDOT. Detroit City Council recently approved the fare changes [Link] for DDOT which will be implemented on 5/01/19.

You’re invited to any of four public hearings SMART is hosting regarding their proposed fare changes [Link] between Feb 5-7.

The proposed changes include eliminating all transfer fares, reducing the number of pass options from 25 to six, and eventually adding a mobile fare payment app and additional retail sites for ticket purchases. The standard fare for both systems will cost $2 (so no change from SMART’s current base fare) and will include four hours of unlimited trips on both DDOT and SMART. Passengers also would have the option of a 24-hour regional pass with unlimited transfers between the two systems for $5, 7-day regional pass for $22 and 31-day regional pass for $70. Reduced fares will be available for students (with ID), seniors & persons with disabilities.

Please try and attend a meeting if you can!
