Model D: Trains to Planes Without Automobiles

Model D, a weekly e-magazine and web site that tells the story of Detroit’s transformation through original stories, photography, videos, and news links, ran a great cover story this week about the proposed Detroit – Metro Airport – Ann Arbor commuter train, entitled, "Trains to Planes Without Automobiles:"

Traveling to and from Detroit Metropolitan Airport without a car is not easily done. . . .  SEMCOG is considering establishing a basic commuter rail service by the end of this year. . . .  That would mean connecting Metro Airport to seven of Metro Detroit’s most vibrant downtowns, five of its largest sports stadiums, four of its major universities and two of the Big Three’s headquarters, among other significant institutions. If done correctly, it could also mean spurring more dense and valuable commercial and residential development, cutting down air pollution and reigning in suburban sprawl. . . .

Crain’s Detroit Business also ran a lead article about transit, "Groups push forward on mass-transit proposals," highlighting the many different transit projects moving forward right now.
