M-1 Rail to Break Ground July 28!

I’ve heard from more than a few people that they won’t believe the M-1 Rail streetcar project will really happen until they see shovels in the ground. Well, that day has finally come!

M-1 Rail is under construction!

The M-1 Rail team announced that with the unanimous City Council approval of their operating contract, they will officially begin construction July 28. Of course they’ve already been moving underground utilities out of the way and DDOT buses have been detoured for the construction for months. But now this is official construction, involving rails in the ground, at long last.

They have mapped out a busy two years of construction, but are dividing it up into small chunks so as to minimize construction-related road closures.

There are a pair of M-1 RAIL Community Project Update Meeting coming up:

Central Business District Edition
Wednesday, July 2, 6 p.m. – 8 p.m.  (doors open at 5:30 p.m.)
At The Madison, 1555 Broadway

and

Midtown Edition
Wednesday, July 9, 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. (doors open at 5:30 p.m.)
at the MSU Detroit Center, 3408 Woodward Avenue
