The Brookings Institute just published a paper on Walkable Urban Places. You can see an abstract and download the report here: Footloose and Fancy Free

Among some of the interesting findings:

  • Many of the most walkable places are adjacent to downtowns.
  • New York metro area has the highest number of most walkable urban places.
  • Rail transit seems to place a significant role as a catalyst for walkable urban development.
  • The Northeast and West Coast regions have a greater prevalence of walkable urban development.
  • Detroit is #18 out of 30!
