John Hertel to lead SMART

According to Crain’s Detroit Business, current RTCC CEO John Hertel will be taking over as General Manager of SMART:

"Hertel, 63, was appointed general manager of the Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation bus system Thursday and is poised to begin contract negotiations next week.

In that role, Hertel expects to continue to advocate for the (tri-county regional transit plan) that he developed as the current CEO of the Regional Transportation Coordinating Council’s Detroit regional mass transit effort.

The council’s goal was to create such a plan and develop legislation that would create the regional transit authority that’s needed to qualify for federal funding to build and operate the system.  That’s done, Hertel said, allowing him to move on to SMART, which has been an integral part of the regional system planning. . . .

Ficano’s office issued a statement: “With John Hertel’s experience at RTCC, he has the expertise, knowledge and skills to implement and adopt a regional plan for the SMART system, as well as implementation of a broader transportation initiative inclusive of bus and rail transportation.”
